Spending for Teens

Spending for Teens

Window shopping may be fun but it is much better to actually buy the items desired.

Teens, just like anyone, want to have cool stuff. Gadgets ranging from the latest iPods, game consoles to the latest fashion, name it and teens would want it. There’s a limitation though, and that’s called money.

Sons and daughters of the rich and famous may be lucky to have what they want but for an average teenager, it can be frustrating.

Luckily, parents do give teens the opportunity to spend money wisely. Sometimes the allowances are given on a weekly basis so as to train the teens in managing and budgeting their own money. Lately though, credit card companies come up with an ingenious strategy of coming up with credit cards exclusively for teens.

There are a number of available credit cards for teens. Parents are now seeing the advantages of getting one because these particular credit cards have a spending limit which means, teens could not go on a shopping spree anytime they want.

It is also a great way to monitor the spending habits of teens and to determine if money was very well spent.

Teens at this point should know how to limit spending habits. It is a great way of training oneself to be responsible in spending money. It should be implanted in the young teen’s mind that the money is hard-earned money and it would be a poor repayment to let the parents pay burgeoning debts for unimportant stuff.

For teens, it is advisable to get reliable advice from parents because they are the best resource on how to budget money. In order to train oneself, why not accompany mom in buying grocery and see how she manages the money intended for grocery? Did she impulsively get the products in the supermarket or did she have a list of things to buy? From that point of view, the teen gets to see that before purchasing something, a careful planning was done.

Next, know the difference between want and need. There is a big difference between the two. Teens may want something that they don’t need while they need something that they don’t really want. The important thing is, before buying something, think first if it will be beneficial.

Finally, what’s life without friends? Indeed, friends can give valuable advices on what’s necessary or not. It is always good to remember that honest money is not easy to earn. Therefore, buy something that is every inch the money’s worth.

I can certainly understand your dilemna. I am a grand-father that tends to bend over backward to make sure that my grands have everything that they need. I am also the dad to five sons, and my wife tended to go a bit overboard at Christmas herself. She was not one to buy stuff over the course of the year though. With all that said, it seems to me that the kids are old enough to have frank talks about finances. They need to have a good grip on the costs of living anyway as they will be going out on their own soon. In addition, I would explain it as straight forward as I could that they are older now and their wants are way more expensive now. Mom and Dad (I assume from your question) work hard for what they have and it is very important that they spend the income that they have wisely. Putting money in a 401K at this point in your life is a much bigger priority than lavish Christmas gifts. Saving for college funds is more important than gifts. Another aspect that I would be sure to cover is that parents make mistakes too. One mistake is spending money that one can not afford. Credit cards are not the answer either! Making a mistake in the past is not a valid reason to continue making mistakes.

I hope that I have not rambled, but I think that I having a feeling for your anxiety. What I have suggested is just an outline so make adjustments that fit your circumstances and put your down and have that candid discussion; family style. Good luck.

Now a days teens are so exposed to indoors as their choice of entertainment is more than the previous days. Those days there is no T.V., no games stuff etc..

Secondly, socializing are reduced when compared before, society becomes more money oriented..

Downtown Disney is free, but is mostly shops and small restaurants. But, if you're looking for a free Disney thing this is the place to go. There are also two mini-golf courses on Disney property. One is near the Swan/Dolphin resorts and the other is right outside the entrance to Blizzard Beach. Still a hint of Disney but way less expensive.

25% of students used a computer for something that was not school work for 3 or more hours per
day on an average school day. This is up slightly from 22% in 2003.

Visiting cancer units might help, though teens often think they are immortal. Try anything that might help.

Do you know how to do the project where you construct an "imitation lung" using a large jar, cotton balls, a stopper, tubes, etc. and then you can actually make it "smoke" a cigarette? I don't remember the exact instructions, but it wasn't difficult, and I'm sure you cna find them on-line. (If I find it I'll edit this answer.) The kids can watch how much black stuff accumulates in the lung with just one cigarette.

One of the things I did with my eighth graders was to first start innocuously by getting them to list some of the things they'd like to have by the time they are, say 16. They often suggested very expensive items. Then we discussed how likely it was that they would get them. From there we went on to look at the cost of cigarettes and multiply that by packages per day. IN the end we extrapolated to the cost over a lifetime of simply buying the cigarettes. It worked with some of them. I think teenagers are sometimes much more concerned about their pocektbooks than their health.

I've attached one website. I hope this helps.
