So you Want to Be a Fashion Model?

So you Want to Be a Fashion Model?

Have you ever thought about becoming a fashion model? Do you think you have what it takes for that kind of job? The typical fashion model travels to exotic places, models the latest clothes, fashions, and accessories from top designers, and can even be featured in various magazines, which of course can also then lead to being pursued by manufacturers for you to do product endorsements.

But that is typically not where a fashion model STARTS. Like anything else, a fashion model or teen model usually starts significantly lower on the totem pole while they are gaining visibility with potential clients and top modeling agencies around the world. But if you are willing to “pay your dues”, the rewards can be fabulous from many perspectives, including travel, mingling with celebrities, attending exclusive events, and of course from a financial perspective. Top models can earn upwards of thousands of dollars per day.

Fashion modeling is no longer limited to just the “perfect” people anymore with the great looks, superb hair, and a Barbie-doll figure. Particularly in recent years, the fashion designers have started to realize that by only targeting the “perfect” people, they were ignoring a large portion, indeed a MAJORITY, of the audiences they could potentially target to sell their merchandise, accessories, and fashions.

That being the case, there is also a market for fashion models that almost spans the entire range of types of people; i.e., the petite, the “plus size”, the teen, the “mature”, and yes even the retiree crowd. Think about it, all those types of people have money also, and are willing to spend it if they are aware of the possibilities and availability of their products. And selling their creations and fashions is what they are in business for! To become a successful fashion model today, you no longer need to be limited to the group that is about 5 foot 8 inches tall at 120 pounds with perfect bouncy hair and about 22 years old.

There are many types of modeling jobs available, and virtually any of them would be a good start for someone with the motivation and desire to get into some of the top spots and top agencies. There is catalog modeling, runway modeling, showroom modeling, promotional or trade show modeling, television modeling, as well as print modeling like in newspapers or magazines.

Make no mistake about it, it is a tough market and there will likely be some long hours involved. But for those with the motivation and desire to succeed in this very competitive industry, the rewards can far outweigh the negatives.

Help answer the question about teen fashion

Why are little girl clothes modelled on teen fashion?
Clothes for small girls (including toddlers) seem to be designed in the same styles as teen clothes even though little girls are a completely different shape. Why is this? Where can little girls get sensible clothes that are comfortable to play in?

    To be a model:
-Well to be a model you have to reach a certain height- 5'7'' or higher
-You also have to be normal weight, not toooo thin cause that's digusting.
-You can start a local modeling agency and get a comp card which showcases your look and what your talent is.

    For a fashion designer:
-Get involved with your school if there is any fashion clubs or fashion shows
-At my school we have a clothing/sewing class, however i already know how to sew so im not taking that
-Then if their is any completer programs at your high school called fashion and textiles, i would take that because that is really good.
-You might also want to start portfolios or enter any design contests. Hope this helps!

First of all, you'll need a portfolio. And not one full of photos taken by your friends. Go to a professional photographer who will know how to show you in the best possible light — literally.

Your portfolio should include at least one head shot where you're looking right into the camera and at least one full-length shot, and it should contain both color and black-and-white photos. Wear fashionable clothes, but go for "timeless" over "trendy" — plain t-shirts with jeans, plain oxford shirts with dark-colored dress pants — styles that won't look "dated" a couple of months after the photos are taken.

You'll want at least two sets of 18-24 8"x10" photos — one set for you to keep and the other(s) to bring with you when you visit modeling agencies, either by responding to ads or by looking them up in your local yellow pages (on- or off-line). Put them in nice (not necessarily expensive) photo albums (discount stores like Wal-Mart carry them), one photo per page. Put a printed (not handwritten) label on the inside cover with your name, contact info, and vital statistics (age, height, weight, hair color, eye color). It's a good idea to put a label on the back of each photo with just your name and phone number, too.

Another thing you can do is call or visit local art schools, and/or the art departments of any local colleges, to see if they need models (paid or volunteer). It's not glamorous work, but it will help you get used to some of the non-glamorous aspects of modeling — long hours on your feet (or other parts of your body), holding poses, and being stared at by strangers.

    Best of luck to you.

    Definitely a model agency agent?

The answer in a perfect world would be that you don't need to lose weight if you want to model.

In the real world, models who are 5'8" probably weight 110lbs at most. Of course there are models who weigh more at that height, but they're probably mostly local, small-time who won't have a real career out of it.

It takes a lot of money to get started as a model. If "money is tight" modeling is not for you!

Anyone can be a model as long as they have the right attitude and are happy with the work, and don't expect overnight success. If you are actually thinking about it here is some advise.

I have heard a lot of bad thing about SOME (not all) modelling agencies and how they make you pay for photos and photo sessions before they take you on then never give you any work. Always check with the local Better Business Bureau.

NEVER GO ON YOUR OWN ALWAYS TAKE YOUR PARENTS!!!! BE VERY CAREFUL WHAT YOU SIGN!!!

I think a better starting place before you go to agencies is if you have a friend who is reasonable with a camera (do not have to be a professional or even that good just okay) Just take 100 photos of yourself in different poses, clothing and backgrounds then pick out 10-20 nice photos. You can then use this as a portfolio, and even better instead of printing them which cost you money every time, host them on a website and get some business cards print with the website address on and just hand these out instead. This is a far cheaper way of doing it and with no RISK. You should never have to pay to get a job if you do there is a high chance it is a scam.

However if you would like a personal portfolio site please contact me and I will set you on up for free. I can design you a fully personalised flash website with as much or little information and then host it for you. This site can contain a gallery of your photos, personal information, list of work, contact details, etc or if you prefer just a couple of photos and nothing else. It can be password protected and all images will be protected as is humanly possible, or the photos can be available to download.

Examples of work can be provided on request. Just message me here if you want, I am a professional website designer but have lots of free time (and enough money) so I am currently doing free sites for small bands, small artist etc, basically anyone who could not afford them otherwise. I have my own hosting server so can offer hosting servers or you can host the site yourselves. No images sent to me will be used for anything other than your site and I will not give anyone your detail or link to the site. You will have complete control and the site can be removed or changed at any time. This is not a scam and I will design a site for FREE, I do not need the money, and enjoy working. If you do want it message me you can tell me what you want and how you want it done and I will help.

parents permission required if you want a site.
