For years, plus size teens and young adults had little in the way of choice for fashionable, youthful clothing. They were forced to shop at “fat” stores, and find the least conservative styles at the “plus size ladies or guys” store. Manufacturers and retail stores would call all their plus size clothing, “teen friendly” when in reality the large flower print smock type blouses didn’t even really appeal to old ladies! It took years for the s/m/l designer mindset to realize that the majority of women and men, let alone teens aren’t s/m/l.

Plus size pre-teens had it even worse. At that awkward growing stage, pre-teens had to buy jeans that were way too baggy, long and shapeless and even with alteration, they would grow out of them quickly. Swimming suits for pre-teens went to size 14 or 16 if they were lucky, and they were never sized properly or attractive. JC Penneys and Sears were about the only common brick and mortar stores with some choice for plus size pre-teen and plus size teen fashion. And of course, back then in the 80s and early 90s there wasn’t an internet and catalog companies didn’t cater to plus size teens either! Going back further, the fashion world all but ignored plus size people in general. There might be one large size store in town and the mumu house dress and the boxy navy suit were all they carried. Plus size teenage girls in the 50s and 60s had to resort to wearing men’s jeans and slacks and shirts in order not to look like a 60 year old grandmother. The 70s brought an appreciation and realization that one size did not fit all, and jean companies began to stretch their line to size 18 and 20 with some fashionable choices. Richard Simmons came on the fashion scene in the early 80s and brought a recognition that plus size women and men were people too and might want some style in the wardrobe. But it still took another 20 years for fashion to embrace a teenage, youthful plus size look.

Thank goodness times have changed! Finally the fashion world has recognized there is a market for young, hip, plus size clothing and the internet is the delivery vehicle. The internet has forced choice on the fashion manufacturers and they are slowly realizing the demand is there and profitable. Forward thinking companies like Alight, Always for Me, Torrid, b&lu, Lane Bryant and The Avenue are delivering plus size teen fashions, in many choices and styles. Plus size teens still can’t find many options at the mall but that will no doubt change as the popularity of the online plus size teen stores becomes evident. Television shows like Oprah, Tyra and The View are featuring plus size fashion shows as the norm and not the exception. The waif model is morphing into a more realistic body type and fashion designers are building their styles on “normal” women, rather than designing a size 0 and making it larger for their plus size customers.

This notion that plus size teens would rather hide because of their weight problem and then not need fashion is being replaced with the realization that with body acceptance comes a greater ability to deal with weight issues. Again, stars like Oprah, Tyra and plus size model Emme have consistently asked for change in the way society treats plus size teens and adults. Slowly our image of a beautiful woman or attractive man isn’t limited to skin and bones, but includes all shapes and sizes. This new, healthy way of looking at size and style will ultimately help plus size teens feel better about themselves both mentally and physically. However, there is no need to lose heart as there are ways to make the transition from wayward teen to mature adult easier.

If you act on suspicion alone, the teen will use your lack of actual knowledge to manipulate you into feelings of guilt or anger and thus sidestep the whole issue.

3) Discipline – Most teenagers prefer structure in their lives, limits to what they can do. Trying to push past these boundaries is what helps them to internalize accepted social mores since the family is where the child first comes in contact with the rules of reciprocity i.e. behave or else there will be consequences to face.

4) Flexibility – Balance discipline with flexibility, in other words, choose your battles. Choice of clothes, fashion, music call for a degree of resigned acceptance – they do outgrow those fads – but disrespect, acting out in anger merit greater attention. It is alright, even desirable, for a teenager to question authority, as long as he/she realizes that it does not give the teen carte blanche to attack it.

5) Guidance – Never let yourself forget that as a parent you are your child’s most important role model, even if at times it doesn’t feel like it. As your child passes through the teen years, your job description changes from teacher to guide, gently but firmly piloting the teenager through troubled waters through example and suggestions.

Trying hard to act as an adult by masking the emotions is common among teenagers, but it does not mean that they are not receptive to genuine expressions of love. It is not enough to love your teen, he/she must feel it at the very core of their being. Hugs, kisses, terms of affection and constantly telling your child how much he/she means to you will be the anchor during trying times.

Above all have faith in yourself and your child and you can see the result in the years to come as your wayward teen grows into the adult you can be proud of. It will be your crowning achievement.

Thanks to advance technology, it is now possible for a teenager to interact with his peers, others he know but most he only sees in pictures and videos. If distance has barred teenagers from knowing other teens and relate to them their dreams, thanks to the teen community, teenagers now has unlimited resources to know the lives of other teenagers from various lands and cultures.

A teen community can be accessed online. What a teenager does is visit the site, register, fill in the required information, login and viola, the other teens are within his reach.

The teen community, in living up to its principle as a second home, has set regulations to police the teens and impose parental guidance. The internet is a dangerous medium if teenagers are given unlimited access to sites which are deplorable and not suited to them. This is where the teen community can assure the parents that it guides the teenagers in sharing their experiences and making their own choices in the most healthy and wholesome manner.

A Teen Community sets out rules which must be followed by the members, and a violation of these rules causes the members to be banned or suspended. A member of the teen community has to respect the rights and culture of fellow members. Teenagers have customs that are different from each other and respect is a must. Some teen communities allow photos to be shared, while others prohibit this. In most cases, the actual personal information such as home address and phone numbers cannot be given. The essence is to avoid the interaction to become too personalized. Giving information of other members is not also allowed in respect to the privacy of others.

A teen wants to communicate and writing is one of the best media. A teen community ensures that all contents, communication, and behavior are within “PG” guidelines. Vulgar language, nudity, depictions of sex and strong violence are prohibited Harassment in whatever form is not allowed. By harassment we mean communicating or behaving in an offensive, intimidating or threatening way towards the other members of the community. This is noteworthy because it helps the teenagers develop a wholesome personality while in the teen community.

Although debates and discussions are encouraged in a teen community, these must be done within the rules. Teens are informed that debates must be on issues, and never on personalities.

The allowable age in a Teen Community is ages 13 to 17 only, although some are for 18 years old and over. Most teen communities allow the visits of some adults purposely to help the teenagers such as leading educational projects and counseling.

Much to the good things that Teen Communities offer to the children, there is still no place like home. Parents must always provide the environment of sharing, respect, trust and love that a teen wants. After all, no agency, not even the teen community, has more responsibilities than the parents.
